o Some 2x6 lumber
o Galvanized screws
o Sand

o A steel fire bowl
o Miter saw
o Drill

1. Use the 2x6 lumber to make a frame for your project measuring 56 inches square. Finish your frame by taking four more pieces of lumber and using it to make a decorative edge along the top of your frame. You will want to make sure your edge has mitered ends so that the corners have a neat appearance.

2. Once the edge is complete, use the screws to attach it to your frame. You can paint or stain your frame, if desired. Make sure that it is completely dry before moving on to Step 3.

3. Place the frame in the spot where you want your fire pit to be situated. Make sure that the frame is level.

4. Fill the frame about two-thirds full of sand. Smooth the surface with your hand or a flat tool.

5. Now you will place the fire bowl in top of the sand. Be sure to put some extra sand up against the bowl to hold it in place.

6. Add the small gravel or river rocks until the sand is completely covered.

Now you can start to enjoy your patio fire pit. It's important to be safe when you are dealing with an open flame, though. You will want to make sure that you haven't placed your patio fire pit too close to your house.

If you put the fire pit at least 10 feet away from your house, it should be far enough away. The "10 Foot Rule" also applies to your garage, shed, fence, or other structures on your property. When it comes to your patio furniture, keep chairs and tables at least three feet away from the fire pit.

You might want to purchase a screen to keep stray embers from flying out. Always be sure that the fire is completely out before you walk away from it, too. Keep an eye on the weather; if it's too windy outside, wait until another time to light the fire.
